EURUSD Trading Strategy: How to Trade Forex's Most Liquid Pair
A practical EURUSD trading strategy: how it behaves by session, the ECB, Fed, CPI and NFP drivers to watch, and how to apply the sweep, MSS and 15m FVG model.
EURUSD — the euro against the US dollar — is the most traded currency pair in the world. That deep liquidity makes it a natural starting point for new forex traders and a core market for experienced ones. It also means the pair tends to respect clean technical levels, which suits a rules-based, session-timed approach.
This guide covers how EURUSD behaves, what moves it, when to trade it, and how we apply the TJR model — liquidity sweep → Market Structure Shift → 15-minute Fair Value Gap — to the pair.
What Makes EURUSD Different From Other Majors?
EURUSD has a personality worth understanding before you trade it.
- Deepest liquidity in forex. Huge volume flows through EURUSD every day. Spreads are typically among the tightest available, and price tends to move in a more orderly way than thinner pairs.
- Steadier daily range. Compared with GBPUSD "Cable", EURUSD usually covers less ground in a day. Stops can often be tighter, but targets should be realistic too.
- A clean read on the dollar. Because the euro is the dollar's largest counterpart, EURUSD often acts as a mirror of broad US dollar strength or weakness.
- Two central banks in focus. The pair is driven by the gap between European Central Bank (ECB) and Federal Reserve policy expectations.
What is a pip on EURUSD?
On EURUSD, one pip is the fourth decimal place — a move from 1.0850 to 1.0851. Prices are usually quoted to a fifth decimal (a "pipette") for finer pricing. Knowing this matters for stop placement and position sizing.
Key Drivers of EURUSD Price
EURUSD responds to economic data and central-bank news from both sides of the Atlantic. The releases below are the ones that most often produce volatility.
| Driver | Region | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Fed rate decision and press conference | US | Sets expectations for US interest rates and the dollar |
| ECB rate decision and press conference | Eurozone | Sets expectations for euro rates; tone often matters as much as the decision |
| US CPI | US | Inflation data shapes Fed expectations |
| Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) | US | Labour-market strength feeds into rate expectations |
| Eurozone CPI (flash estimate) | Eurozone | Key inflation input for the ECB |
| PMI releases | Both | Early read on economic momentum |
The pattern to remember: anything that shifts the expected gap between Fed and ECB rates can move EURUSD. A hotter-than-expected US CPI print, for example, can lift the dollar and push EURUSD lower, all else equal.
Use an economic calendar to mark these in advance. Our guide on how to read an economic calendar explains impact ratings, forecasts and how to plan around releases.
What Is the Best Time to Trade EURUSD?
EURUSD trades around the clock on weekdays, but liquidity — and clean structure — is concentrated in a few windows.
- London Killzone (02:00–05:00 EST). European desks come online, volume rises sharply, and price frequently sweeps the Asian session high or low before choosing a direction. This is often the cleanest window for EURUSD. Our London killzone strategy covers it in detail.
- New York Killzone (07:00–11:00 EST). US data such as CPI and NFP is typically released at 08:30 EST, and the London–New York overlap brings the highest combined volume of the day. See the New York killzone trading strategy for more.
- Asian session. EURUSD is usually quiet here. Rather than trading it, we mark the Asian range high and low as liquidity targets for London.
Outside these windows, EURUSD can drift sideways in a tight range. Fewer trades in better conditions is usually the more sustainable approach.
How to Trade EURUSD With the Sweep → MSS → FVG Model
Here's how the core TJR strategy applies to EURUSD, step by step.
- Set your bias. Check the higher-timeframe trend on the 4-hour or daily chart and note any major releases due that day.
- Mark liquidity. Plot the Asian session high and low, the previous day's high and low, and any obvious equal highs or equal lows.
- Wait for a sweep. During a killzone, let price run one of those levels — trading through it and then failing to hold.
- Confirm a Market Structure Shift. After the sweep, look for a strong, displacing move that breaks the most recent swing point in the opposite direction. Our Market Structure Shift guide shows what qualifies.
- Find the 15-minute FVG. Mark the Fair Value Gap left inside that displacement leg. Ideally it sits in discount for longs or premium for shorts — see premium vs discount and the OTE.
- Enter on the retracement into the FVG, with the stop beyond the swing that swept liquidity.
- Target opposing liquidity, such as the other side of the Asian range or the previous day's high or low.
Example walkthrough (hypothetical)
Say EURUSD drifts up during Asia and forms a range. At the London open, price pushes above the Asian high, triggers breakout buy stops, then sharply reverses and breaks the last 15-minute swing low. That displacement leaves a bearish 15-minute FVG in premium. The plan: sell the retracement into the gap, stop above the sweep high, and target the Asian low. No outcome is guaranteed — the point is that every step is defined before you click.
Adjusting the Model for EURUSD
A few EURUSD-specific tweaks help:
- Size stops to the pair. EURUSD's range is generally calmer than Cable's, so don't carry over wide GBPUSD stops. Size off the actual distance to the sweep.
- Be careful around 08:30 EST. Releases like CPI and NFP can sweep both sides of a range in minutes. Many traders wait for the data to print and for structure to form afterwards.
- Respect ECB days. Volatility often spikes during the ECB press conference, not just at the rate announcement.
- Watch the dollar index. If EURUSD and the broader dollar picture disagree, the setup may be weaker.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is EURUSD good for beginners?
EURUSD is often recommended for beginners because of its deep liquidity, typically tight spreads and generally steadier behaviour than more volatile pairs. That doesn't make it easy — it still needs a clear plan, defined risk and patience.
What is the best session to trade EURUSD?
The London killzone (02:00–05:00 EST) and the New York killzone (07:00–11:00 EST) are generally the most active windows. The Asian session is usually quieter and more useful for marking liquidity than for taking trades.
EURUSD vs GBPUSD: which is better to trade?
Neither is better in general. EURUSD usually moves more steadily with tighter spreads, while GBPUSD tends to have a wider daily range. The same model applies to both, but stop sizes and expectations should be adjusted to each pair.
Should I trade EURUSD during news releases?
It's usually safer to avoid entering right before a high-impact release such as NFP, CPI or a central-bank decision. Price can move sharply in both directions. Many traders wait for the release and then look for a fresh sweep and structure shift.
The Takeaway
EURUSD rewards patience and structure. Its deep liquidity tends to produce clean sweeps of session highs and lows, and the sweep → MSS → 15-minute FVG sequence gives you a repeatable way to trade them.
